Vaccinations are important for all horses but they are especially important in the pregnant mare. They reduce the risk of abortions and set the foal up for success. There are some vaccines specific for pregnant mares along with the core vaccinations we recommend for all horses. The timing of vaccinations is also different for pregnant mares.
Vaccinations specific to pregnant mares
Pregnant mares should be vaccinated against Equine Rhinopneumonitis also known as Equine Herpes Virus-1(EHV-1) at 5, 7, and 9 months of gestation. EHV-1 can cause respiratory infections as well as abortions in pregnant mares. Some horses can be asymptomatic carriers of EHV-1 which can then spread to pregnant mares and cause abortions.
Core vaccinations for pregnant mares
Pregnant mares should also be up to date on their core vaccinations. This includes Eastern Encephalomyelitis, Western Encephalomyelitis, West Nile Virus, Tetanus and Rabies. Rabies can be given prior to breeding or 4-6 weeks prior to the anticipated birth of the foal. The rest should be administered again at 4-6 weeks prior to the anticipated birth of the foal. This will induce an antibody response in the mare and cause there to be antibodies secreted in the colostrum to protect the foal.
Additional vaccinations for pregnant mares
There may be additional vaccinations recommended for your pregnant mare depending on your location and specific situation. Many mares in our area are also vaccinated for influenza and rhinopneumonitis 4-6 weeks prior to foaling. Please contact us if you have any vaccination questions for your mare.
